This essay attempts to evaluate the current policy commitments of the Indian government with respect to health, education and poverty alleviation, locating these in the context of the framework of economic reforms unfolding since 1991. The important concern of the paper is to explore specific connections between the relevant policies and the possible consequences for the relatively marginalised social and economic groups.
