Experiments, though necessary and inevitable, with
reference periods (the foremost being the lack of
independence between them) have rendered the results from
the 55th
round of NSS survey on poverty incomparable with previous
ones. However, this does not undermine the importance of
NSS as a crucial and the most important source of data on
the Indian Economy. Simultaneously, opinions expressing
doubts regarding the accuracy of NSS results on income
poverty given differences with alternate series like the
National Accounts Statistics (NAS) are baseless, since the
30 day schedules of the two series actually show very
similar patterns over the nineties, specially in the case
of rural poverty. |
