National Seminar on Universalisation of Elementary Education in Urban areas: With a Special Focus on Urban Slums

The urban India is characterized by wide inequalities in income and access to social and physical infrastructure. The slums acutely epitomize the deprivation and inequalities of urban India. The slum dwellers do not have access to many of the benefits of urban development as they have emerged in haphazard manner. The locational, social and economic segregation of slums presents special problems in the provision and expansion of education. Besides the impact of current changes in urban governance with regard to financing and provision of urban services on access and equity in education remains uncertain. It is in this context that the issues and concerns relating to universalisation of elementary education in urban areas in general and slums in particular need to be paid greater attention. Against this background, NIEPA proposes to organize a Seminar, which would focus on issues and problems related to educational planning and management in slums. It is expected that the Seminar would identify key concerns and suggest alternative strategies for improving access, retention and achievement levels of the urban slum children.
Papers are invited from professionals and practitioners on the following themes:
1. Planning for Educational Provisions in Urban Slums
2.
SSA and Urban Slums
3. Issues
of Access, Retention and Achievement in Slum Areas
4. Alternative modes of provision including NGOs Efforts for UEE in
Slum Areas
Contributors are requested to send a copy of their abstract in around
1000 words on any one of the above-mentioned themes to mailto:confslums@gmail.com
by October 16, 2006. Short listed contributors would be required to
submit the full paper (8000-10000 words) by December 15, 2006. Those
