Call for Student Nominations
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce a call
for student nominations for the 7th Annual Advanced Graduate Workshop
on Poverty, Development and Globalization, organized jointly by the
Azim Premji University, the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET)
and Columbia University's Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD). This
small interdisciplinary workshop, which I will direct, will be held
in Bangalore, India from January 3-17, 2014, with the option for a 3
day visit to the Azim Premji Foundation field office in Yagdir following
the workshop. The workshop builds off our successful re-launch last
year and is modeled in the tradition of the previous summer workshops
organized by IPD for which many of you have nominated students in the
past.
The goal of the workshop is to bring together graduate students in development
studies at an advanced stage of their dissertation work. A series of
lectures given by leading scholars and practitioners will deal with
a range of economic, political and social issues pertaining to development
and poverty. Speakers discuss topics related to the most pressing issues
in development from both a topical and regional perspective. Students
will refine their research and presentation skills within assigned small
groups under the guidance of faculty leaders in preparation for a culminating
workshop-wide presentation of their dissertation material. We welcome
applications from all fields in the social sciences; however, students
should have some background in economics or familiarity with quantitative
techniques. The AGW provides a unique opportunity for students to receive
constructive advice and feedback on their dissertation presentations.
Accepted candidates will join a distinguished rank of alumni and forge
invaluable connections with top flight lecturers and peers, all committed
to the study of the myriad issues confronting developing economies.
We expect to accept approximately 25 students for the 2014 workshop.
Students will reside at Bangalore's WIPRO Learning Centre for the two
week duration. Room, board and airfare will be fully covered for all
participants.
As in the past, I cordially invite you or your department to nominate
1-2 students to submit an application. Nominations from our illustrious
network are always given due consideration and will be considered a
plus for any candidate in this highly competitive application process.

Please be sure to send on the names of only those who have accepted
the nomination. IPD will then be in touch with those students
directly with application instructions.
For those who may inquire with you, we do also allow self-nomination/application,
and guidelines for those wishing to do so will be posted on the IPD
website at www.policydialogue.org.
Applications received after June 15 will not be considered.
